Get The Best Winter Coats

A coat is more than just a fashion statement; it is your armour against the weather, especially in winter. It is the one time that fashion really meets function head on.

It is also the garment we spend the most money on and the most time in each year. We expect so much of a coat- it must protect us from the elements, go with everything, last at least one or two autumn/winter seasons, been worn daily and survive the wear and tear.

So it is no wonder that we find it so difficult to find a coat that meets all the criteria.

Here are a few tips on what to look for when trawling the shops this year…

♥ A coat is the ultimate staple and will be worn daily so it is imperative that it goes with a majority of your shoes and bags. If you go for mainly brown accessories then you will need to consider a neutral colour like tan, white or grey. If you err on the dark side with black accessories the choice may be easier as brighter colours will work well also.

♥ Many winter coats come in white and cream but this may not be the best choice for anyone who lives more than a stone’s throw away from a dry cleaners.

♥ Consider buying your coat a size bigger than other clothes as you have to account for colder days when you will have a cardigan or sweater on underneath.

Length is important- knee length is always in style and is compatible with trousers and dresses/skirts.

Buy the best you can afford- you get what you pay for and the better the quality the longer it will last. You can afford to scrimp with more fashionable styles that will go off-trend, as it will be tossed out well before it’s worn out!

♥ If you can, try to buy classic, timeless styles in the January sales ready for the following winter.

♥ The warmth-factor required in a coat depends on where you live, if your winters are more wet than cold maybe a trench or mac will suffice?

So I hope that makes the experience a little less daunting. It may take a few shopping trips to find the perfect coat, so don’t give up and don’t impulse buy! Also, take a friend or ask an assistant for advice- a second opinion always helps to make an informed decision.
